On June 5th, 2014 the
suspect responsible for the death of three RCMP officers was arrested. This is
one of the worst mass shootings in RCMP history alongside with two other people
being wounded. The resident neighbors in Moncton, New Brunswick were scared
reckless as police were called Wednesday night as a man, who goes by the name, Justin Bourque, was spotted to be walking along a road carrying something
that was, “believed to be a gun,” in hand. Pictures illustrate how Bourque was
dressed in camouflage, which helped him hide out in the forested backcountry of
New Brunswick. The suspect Justin Bourque is 24 and was apprehended in the
front yard of a woman’s home. The manhunt for Bourque lasted nearly thirty
hours. The death of the three RCMP officers is really unfortunate and is a
tragic lose for the RCMP.
I feel sympathetic for the three
RCMP officers that died due to Bourque’s actions. Reading first hand about this
tragic news story I couldn’t come to grips that it actually happened in Canada!
Shootings such as the one seen with Bourque is something one wouldn’t be
surprised about hearing about as they are common in the United States, and
occur seldom here in Canada. It was just three weeks ago when I read about a
similar situation happening in California where a young man named Eliot Rodger
went on a killing spree, which also caused him to take his own life. In
Bourque’s case, he was arrested and taken into custody. Comparing Canada with
the States I can satisfyingly say that our regulations and level of precaution
about firearms seem more secure. It is not the guns that kill people, because
it is people who kill people. It is still hard to believe such a tragedy
happened in Canada. I’m glad it didn’t happen here close to home in North
Vancouver.
