On May 26th, 2014 a
newly born baby girl, Victoria, was abducted from her maternity ward in
Trois-Rivieres in Quebec, Canada. The kidnapping happened briefly after 7 pm.
The suspect was a 21-year-old woman who managed to be in disguise as a nurse as
she was seen on surveillance video appearing to be a nurse. An amber alert was
issued and through the help of social media, the suspect was caught with the
baby. Baby Victoria was returned to her parents shortly after, as the Police
brought her back to her parents shortly after 10 pm. The 21-year-old suspect is
now undergoing psychiatric evaluation and will face charges.
I could only image what was going
through the minds of Victoria’s parents. Having their newborn daughter taken
must’ve turned their world upside down for that short moment of separation. If
I had a baby and had it abducted from me I would not sleep until I would find
my baby. The fact that the suspect was able to disguise herself without anyone
knowing alarms me as it makes me question how secure our hospitals are here in
Canada. Here in Canada we have some of the best healthcare that a country could
offer, yet we don’t have the best security to go along with it. Let this
abduction be a lesson for hospitals across Canada as it has taught me to not
trust everyone dressed up in uniform. No parent should ever endure the
abduction of their children and should this kind of situation never be repeated again.
